The Tokyo District Court turend down a lawsuit by 130 teachers who had been punised and forced to go through a "retraining program" for refusing to stand and face the Hinomaru flag [the natonal flag] and to sing "Kimigayo" [anthem] at school events.
The teachers's idea is that they were violated their freedom of thought and conscinece. So, they sought 10.000yen in damages each to Tokyo Metropolitan Government. however, the presiding judge said that there was no evidence that Tokyo Metropolitan Goverment had ordered the retraining program.
my opinion
There are some cases like that in japan at public schools. But I feel most adults[parents, teachers even mass media] don't want to talk about this issue. i think it's a important problem, and we have to deal with it.
